Travel options
Rhenigidale is a 20-minute drive from Tarbert, the main settlement on the Isle of Harris, and a 50-minute drive from Stornoway, the principal town on Lewis. Both routes also make for an enjoyable if challenging cycle ride.
The W11 bus runs from Tarbert to Rhenigidale twice a day, Monday to Saturday. It is a request service and must be booked by 20:00 the previous evening for the morning service or by 14:00 for the afternoon service.
Ferry travel to Harris and Lewis
Regular car ferry services run from Uig on Skye to Tarbert and from Ullapool on the mainland to Stornoway. Both services are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (Calmac). Details of timetables and fares are listed on the Calmac web site.
If you plan to take your car on the ferry, we advise you to book your ferry crossing when you book your holiday with us, as the ferry can get booked up in the high season.
Air travel to Lewis
There are regular flights to Stornoway from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Benbecula. Details of all carriers and flights are shown on the Stornoway Airport web site.
Car hire on Harris and Lewis
Isle of Harris Car Hire operates out of Tarbert. Several car hire firms operate out of Stornoway, including Stornoway Car Hire, Car Hire Hebrides, Lewis Car Rental and MacKinnon Self Drive.
Bus and rail travel
Regular bus services run from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Uig on Skye and to Ullapool, where you can connect with the ferries. It is also possible to travel from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Fort William by train and onwards to Uig by bus and from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Inverness by train and onwards to Ullapool. Caledonian Sleeper operates a sleeper service from London to various locations in Scotland, including Fort William and Inverness.

Arriving on foot
Fit walkers can reach Rhenigidale from Tarbert on foot by walking to Urgha on the Scalpay road and then following the hillpath from Urgha known as the Postman’s Path. If this option appeals to you, you may wish to have food delivered to Sith-Phort for your stay. Tesco in Stornoway offers a delivery service, but it must be booked well in advance.
