Creating a home we’d want to visit
We are Peter Edwards and Fiona Rintoul. Peter is the author of many walking and cycling guidebooks, including The Hebrides: 50 walking and backpacking routes. Fiona is an author, translator and journalist. Her books include Whisky Island, a celebration in poetry and prose of the Isle of Islay and its superlative whiskies, with photographs by Konrad Borkowski, and The Leipzig Affair, a novel set in East Germany.
After spending more than a decade exploring the Outer Hebrides, we were delighted to realise our dream of having a home on Harris when we took over Sith-Phort in 2015. We now live in Rhenigidale in the winter and welcome holidaymakers in the summer.
A house with character
We did most of the renovation work at Sith-Phort ourselves. We’ve tried to create the kind of home we would like to visit, using restored second-hand furniture and natural fabrics. We’ve emphasised comfort and practicality and tried to ensure guests have everything they need, including a decent set of kitchen knives: something that always seems to be missing in holiday homes.
The garden was overgrown when we moved in, and we’ve cut it back to get the culverts flowing again and bring the raised beds back into use. We grow fruit, vegetables and herbs in summer, and the extensive garden is a great place to hange out. In 2021, we restored the ruins in the garden, creating a bothy.
Guests from all over the world have now stayed at Sith-Phort, enjoying the peace and tranquility and the unfussy comfort of the house. We look forward to welcoming you too.
